Tonight I've been tinkering with my tactics (again) and searched out an old thread which got me hooked right in when I first got CM 01/02 to get a bit of inspiration.

The thread in question was started by the tactical legend of the day 'GeorgeMcD' and reading it back through it just seems the overall tone and contributions from the other posters is more positive. There is more throwing around ideas then getting stuck on trying to understand how all the sliders work like we see now.

Perhaps I've just got the case of nostalgia which is clouding my vision but tactical discussions just seemed more 'positive' back before there was an overhaul of the tactical settings.

Only people who seem to still enjoy this game are the moderators on this site! It has not only become illogical but also to complicated. A few days ago I was playing and I saw a hint:"If you want to play high tempo, play direct ball". Why can't I play short passing in a high tempo? Why is it SI have decided to destroy a beautiful game? I can imagine people playing this game for the first time thinking: 'This is not worth my time'
And don't even get me started on the bugs in the game, because when you invent a system that you think will work all of a sudden your defensive set-piece settings get changed by the AI, lol
Every year the release the game to early, test it correct for the coming year!!!!!!
I had the same frustration with FM2007 as I am having with FM2008 too many bugs like my players not closing down! SI do you understand this is a vital-attribute in modern day football?
How come this was not tested? Ever since SI took over from Eidos the game has not gotten better. Mote detailled.....Yes, but better.....No!

I dont think its changed much, i think that you have to find a rough formation and tweak it as you go along.

My current game with Torino im playing 4-1-3-2 with low width, 5 for away and 7 or 8 for home.

This seems to keep things tight for me, although when i play good teams im not supprised if i lose 2 -0~4-0 down to people like Kaka or Adriano etc having a good game.

But now, i only have to tweak things like FR for FBs, and Mentality for home and away games.

Use the friendlies for building the basic formation. My first game i lost 3-0 to Fiorentina, although i should of scored 1 or 2.

Then i drew with Sampdoria, then went on to beat Roma, Empoli but im not so optimistic for the next game vs AC Milian !

I seen what i did wrong against Fiore so tweak for the next game, i seen what was lacking against Empoli and tweak again and beat Roma 2-1 and had a goal disallowed.
