Default Animal Collective

I just came by this band by accident, but their experimental mixture of all types of sounds is rather interesting. They way they forge what on the surface seems to be a mess of electronic sampling with guitars and various drum beats to sound coherent is impressive.

Haven't listened much to their earlier stuff as it is said to be very minimalistic and too niched, but Strawberry Jam (their new album) is deceptively catchy. "For Reverend Green", "Peacebone" (also a great video - check it out), "Fireworks" and "Chores" are very different and appealing songs. I can't remove them from my playlist atm.

I will now get hold of their previous album "Feels" to see what that is like, as i've heard good things about that one too.

I realise this band may be a bit too far "out there" for many here, but I was wondering if anyone else has come across this rather fresh and unique sound?

They are fantastic. "Feels" is better than "Strawberry Jam" imo, the only other album I've heard is "Sung Tongs" which, apart from the occasional highlight, is not great. I'd also recommend Panda Bear's (member of the band) solo album "Person Pitch".

Banshee Beat off Feels is the best thing they've ever done. Other than, possibly, Peacebone.

Are you kidding me fbc?!

Sung Tongs is their best material. Kids on Holiday, We Tigers, Leaf House, Winter's Love, Who Could Win a Rabbit, Sweet Road, Whaddit I Done.

SO many highlights on that album!

I'd rate all their albums in this order -

1. Sung Tongs
2. Here Comes the Indian
3. Strawberry Jam
4. Danse Manatee
5. Feels
6. Spirit They've Gone, Spirit They've Vanished
7. Campfire Songs

and I haven't heard Hollinndagain.

The Prospect Hummer EP would be high up too, but obviously it's not an album.

But you won't convert many people hear towards the band I'd bet. Mostly anywhere, despite how accessible Strawberry Jam is.

I don't blame fbc for not understand Sung Tongs, it mostly sounds like a random juxtaposition of clunky sounds, their earlier albums are a lot more experimental than Feels and Strawberry Jam. I can't stand Sung Tongs.

Good band, best listened to on a decent hi-fi though but.

Check out Broken Social Scene if you like that sort of thing.

Afraid not. As I said earlier I've only heard the three albums I mentioned, and I'd agree largely with what RedefiningForm said on Sung Tongs. I do like Who Could Win A Rabbit though.

Anyway, I like Person Pitch better than any Animal Collective album I've heard.
