I would have hated to have lived in the 1960s, sodding liberal lefty hippies.

Yeah, 1968 basically the most important post war year.

It's an important year in history, yes.

The problem is we're stuck in the baby boomers STILL fighting over who was right back then. Bush's National Guard service, Kerry's Swift Boat, god forbid we should talk about issues today, like an unpopular war in Asia, the governmen's readiness to spy on everyone, the instability of Social Security, etc., etc.

the boomers were an influential enough generation to pull/change the world for the last 40 years. the generations that followed were not as well defined (probably not the right word) and as a result molded themselves around that 60s ideal. imo it will continue this way till the internet generation (late 80s births and younger) comes into its own in 20 years or so.

1945. The old powers cease to matter.

In France 68 was definitely one of the most important post war year. This week's strikes are another example of it.

Exactly, Jason, it seems like "today's issues" are still heavily rooted in the politics of the 1960's, and partly the 1970's. There is nothing fresh or innovative at all anymore.

1945 a good shout, Splendid. The end of the Cold War and Soviet Union on 1989 also up there IMO.

I would hate living in Paris atm. Absolute nightmare from what I gather, Meitheisman. Even more worrying is the fact that the authorities don't seem troubled about the situation at all.

That's just part of the French culture in all honesty and one of the biggest reason why I left my country and don't plan on ever going back.
