Don't see it as much of a problem for people who work in offices etc, but if you are dealing with the public or are a bus driver etc then it's probably not a good idea.

As long as you don't come back pished and can't do your work.

it's pretty normal for us to do it here, but in my last job you could be sacked for it because it was an american company founded by a teetotaller christian arsehole.

Used to do lunchtime sessions at least once a week when I worked as part of an office based team.

Now I'm in a stand-alone role where the people I work with in Leeds don't drink at lunchtime (all contractors paid by the hour) or I work from home. I'm sure drinking alone at home during the day is frowned upon.

So can you have a beer at lunch without fear HR getting involved?
to be quite brutally honest i'd drink in my lunch hour if i were surrounded by southerners all day

Worked for an insurance company before where it was acceptable to go out drinking all day, not just at lunch.

My boss said as long as the work gets done I dont care what you do.

Used to get the work done in the morning and spend all afternoon in the pub and even fell asleep at my desk when I got back to the office and no one blinked an eye !

Couldnt do that now though....

Normally go to the pub for one or (more likely) two at lunch. Currently doing our yearly pool competition which involves most people going to the pub at least a couple of times a week. Most people have at least one alcoholic drink while that goes on.

As a carer, I can't drink alcohol whilst working, even if a client does. If I did and was caught - it's immediate termination of employment without question.

My last day at WH Smiths so mcuh fun. England playing football during the day - it was a Saturday - so my mission was to get a pished as possibly whilst doing as little work as possible. Basically like any other day there, but with the enticing addition of alcohol. I was the master of doing nothing but making it look like I was the king. I'd copme from nowhere, march up to a till and boom "Next please!!" with such dedication and authority and everyone in the know would start craking up. They loved it. ANyway, my last day I took my first break with my lunch and had three pints in that time, and than went back and had a top-up in the afternoon. Being 18 I was even more of a lightweight that I am now. Great fun.

Retail.
