A few possible reasons for this:-

1. the game doesn't fully readjust reputation changes until the crossover point from one season to the next. I think it's June 19th for England. You will get an initial boost from winning it but the full effect happens at the crossover point.

2. Your reputation only gets bumped up so far from winning something so unless you have won the Premiership/Champions League double a couple of seasons in a row then because of Newcastle's starting reputation you may still have a lower reputation than the big clubs in England and across Europe.

3. Teams in non active leagues their reputation tends to stay in and around the value they start at and only get affected marginally by results they have in European competition.

For example Inter, Barcelona, Milan all start with a reputation of 9400+. As a club in an active league you as Newcastle would have to wint the Premiership/Champions League double probably 3 seasons in a row to reach that reputation value. Then to keep it at that level you would have to keep on winning both of these competitions year in year out, whereas teams in non active leagues can win absolutely nothing and remain at the reputation they started out as.

Here's a perfect example of this happening with a comparison of how Chelsea and Inter Milan reputation changed from the end of 2008 to the end of 2009.

Chelsea 2008/2009
Came 5th in Premiership, reached QF of Champions League, FA Cup 4th Round
Reputation 2nd August 2008: 9177 => Reputation 1st August 2009: 8761
416 point decrease

Inter 2008/2009 in Non Active Serie A
Highest Possible Position 5th (deduced from them entering the 1st Round Proper of UEFA Cup directly in 2009/2010)
Knocked out in 2nd Round KO Stage of UEFA Cup
Reputation 2nd August 2008: 9553 => Reputation 1st August 2009: 9553
No Effect on reputation.

In this case Inter have a similarly 'disappointing by their standards' season as Chelsea yet their reputation is unaffected. What this leads to in long term games in my experience is these top clubs remaining top clubs indefinitely and essentially cherry picking the best players from any club that they want to for eternity.

It annoyed the hell out of me in my long term FM 07 Fisher game and the same seems to be happening in my current game as Leeds in FM 08.

I have spain and italy active in my game. i doubt my reputation is that high since i have not finshed higher than 3rd in my 3 seasons so far. Its just a massive pain since players like aguero love the club yet javi martinez wants to leave.

I have a bit of a dillema now, his contract ends in 2 years, i ether try and sell him for load now (all the big clubs want him) or i try and build my reputation up in the next season and risk selling him for not as much.

Having never been in that situation I don't know how clever the AI is with regards to bidding for players with one year left on their contract.

I would start looking for a replacement and if you can find one good enough, and come out with a profit after wheeling and dealing then let him go as he will only cause bad blood every time he bitches about it in the media and drag overall team morale down.

You might want to try out a slight flaw in the game that existed in 07 (not sure about 08) whereby if you dropped players wanting to move to a big club sometimes after not playing for a month or so they would start to have doubts about moving. This happened particularly when the team does well relative to their expectations.
