I have been reading a number of articles in the last few days regarding next years formation. To my surprise Carrick appears to be looked over repeatedly for Hargreaves??? Even by posters who believe we will play 4-2-3-1 next season, which I agree with. I find this hard to understand, as if you look at the teams who operate with this formation i.e. Milan you will see that while they have a Gattusso figure there are also two other CM players in the team. One of which roam looking for space (Kaka), and the other (Pirlo) is an excellent passer of the ball who sits back with Gattusso.
I firmly believe last season both Carrick and Hargreaves were our top targets for these positions as they are perfect moulds for these roles.
Scholes is an exceptional passer of the ball, and a genius going forward but is terrible at tackling and defending in general. Anderson has been bought to gradually take Scholes place in the side, over a few seasons, while Nani is a replacement for Giggs.
Surely than the formation should be then
Van Der Sar
G Nev Rio Vidic Evra/Heinze
Carrick Hargreaves
Ronaldo Scholes Giggs/Nani
Rooney
Anderson and Nani will be protected by Fergie in the same way Ronaldo was in his first season. We will have two defensive midfielders and scholes will be freed up to link up play and dominate midfield.
I may be wrong but I doubt we chased both Carrick and especially Hargreaves if they were not going to be in the First 11.
