Rep Power: 10 Supporting: Chelsea Footballers: Gianfranco Zola, John Terry | Best Players never to make it for England Which for you are the best English players who, for whatever reasons, never quite made it or cut it (but could have if given the chance or circumstances had been different, around at the wrong time, etc) at international level? I don't know why, but this 'discussion point' occurred to me when thinking about the case of Frank Lampard (not that there's not still hope). I think it's an interesting subject but I haven't spent that long over trying to draw up a list. What does strike me is how good or fortunate you've got to have been to make any kind of mark with England (e.g. get more than 20 caps). There are some fantastic club players who never or rarely seemed to be in favour. Some of the top of my head: Tommy Smith, Peter Osgood, Alan Hudson, Ron Harris, Charlie George, Andy Cole (not given enough chances with just 3 caps), just for starters. |
