Default Defoe Contract

Just wondered if anybody on here could enlighten me as to the current status of Jermain Defoes's contract. I was under the impression that he currently has just two years left to serve on his contract (could well be wrong); and if this is the case why has there been little mention of him signing a new contract in the media. Both Dawson and Keane have signed two new contracts in the last 18months, surely Defoe deserves some kind of reward for the hard work he has put in at this club.

Or is the fact that he hasn't signed a new contract an indication that he may well be playing at pastures new next season?

Furthermore, with this new rule coming into place regrding players being able to buy out their contracts, could Defoe buy out the rest of his current contract and move on?

Finally, what do you think the club should do with Defoe: should they cash in on him now while they can still make a hefty slice of money, or should he be offered a new contract so that he can continue the great work he has done at this club?
