I realize you meant it as self-deprecation, but it actually is demeaning to people who really are retarded, and they have enough problems as it is. So, next time, if you'd find another way to express it, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Being politically correct in America

</BLOCKQUOTE>
Hah! If only it really was a matter of political correctness! In our society, the only type of discrimination that is still both legal and socially acceptable is that against those with cognitive disabilities.
I see you are in NYC, as am I. I serve on the board of directors of an agency that provides a wide variety of services to people with developmental disabilities, including educational, residential and vocational. Before we open a residence, we are required to go before a local community board to seek approval. Under New York law, the only other people who have to seek permission from the community to live there are Level 3 sex offenders under "Megan's Law".
In the early '80s, a Greek cleric stood up in his church and preached to his congregation that if they allowed their children to come into contact with people with mental retardation, they would catch it. At a hearing in Queens, just over a year ago, I had a member of the community, who had come to protest the opening of a residence for four older impaired adults, come up to me and tell me that he didn't need to read anything about our agency, as he already knew about "the retards who run around naked and punch holes in the wall".
So, please, with such 12th century notions still extant in what is supposedly the most tolerant city in the world, don't talk to me about political correctness.
