I haven't experienced this. Once I was competing in League 2 with Aldershot and I was top by about 15 points with around 15 games to go. I then proceeded to go on my worst run of form, only picking up the odd win in 10 matches. Despite this, the one team in touching distance of me also had a terrible run of form. In fact, they were much worse than I was. I ended up 22 points clear at the end of it.
The AI doesn't cheat, football is just a bitch.
