Default offside?

in a match a cross came in while playing as blackburn my offside santa cruz failed to connect to score the goal but it ended up going in str8 from the cross yet it was ruled offside? also if two players are in front of the oppositions back line and they pass to eachother say to get past the keeper is that classed as offside?

IMO Yes. Sorry to say.

My take on your explanation is, that the Striker Santa Cruz interfierd (<- spelling) with the play and gained an advantage in an offside position, he never touched the ball but had and impact on the play. So may take is yes its offside.

Because he put the goalie off.

Offsides are taken from when the ball is played. If Santa Cruz was offside when the ball was played, then it is offside, no matter where the ball goes.

As pyewackett says above, he was obviously in a position that interfered with play, not far out on the other wing.

For your second question, so long as the ball is passed [i]backwards[/], then the move wouldn't be an offside. Offsides only apply to balls played forwards.

yep, under the current rules i agree.

on a side note tho, i think they should bring back the clear cut offside rule. they could barely make the right decision before, and now the linos and the refs have to take even more into account in a matter of an instant.

as one pundit said once: "if you're not interfering with play, then what are you doing on the pitch".

in the vast majority of cases if you're out on the wing, the defenders and the goalkeeper are aware of that player being an open option, and a potential threat, even if they aren't being directly marked it's still something they have to think about and split their attention between.

yes i agree also that any play stood in an offside position should be offside no matter what the situation, you only have to look at the diarra goal for Birmingham to show just how dumb the current rule is applied and how different officials view the offside rule
