I swear by the classic "spine" theory. First up get yourself a solid paid of centre halves, then a holding midfielder, then a keeper, the a goal scorer and then build the flair around them. Of course, some of this may already be in place when you take over the team. But if you can make yourself hard to beat first, you can build in creativity and goals IMO.

Like the manual says, you can either create a set of tactics around the players you currently have, or (and the most fun way I think) decide on the type of football you want to play, select a formation you like and then buy in the players that are most suited to this style.

The best place for you to get started in terms of tactics and players is to visit the forums on these subjects for more information. You'll probably be able to search for a Newcastle-specific thread in there with detailed information written by other people in your position at the club of your choice.

The great thing about FM is that there is no good or bad way to build a team , manage your team, etc. It's up to you. But if you get it wrong ..... you face the sack, so get what information you can from the various threads on these forums and please feel free to ask any further specific questions once you've had a go.

 Good Luck

I generally start off at a club who have pretty naff players and very little money so I rely heavily on my scouts to unearth players. Then I just make a value judgement based on the scout's report and comparing the player's attributes to those already in my squad to see whether to sign him or not.

In my current game my scout's analysis is useless because he claims every player is not a worthwhile signing which is no help at all when I have a small squad!

Generally I tend to go a bit overboard on signing players on my scout's list who are of similar skill level to each other and what I already have because I can't decide which centre-backs I want so end up with too many.

Firstly, check out the players you already have in the squad. I tend to sort them into three categories; players i want to keep, interim players and players i want to get rid of. Check their attributes and also see what your coaches say about them in order to make this judgement

I then try to sell the players that aren't up to scratch to generate some more money. The interim players i will keep for a season or two until i can bring in better players to replace them.

Its then a case of looking at the squad and seeing in which areas you are weakest. I search for players in these areas and scout any that i see that might be good to get an idea of their current level and potential. I believe its better to raise the overall level of your team rather than having a load of good players in one area.

So, for example, if i have 3 very good strikers but my defence isn't that great i will always try to get in better defenders first rather than looking at attackers regardless of what strikers might be available.

How I build a team depends on what time of the year it is. Relegation battles require dramatic action.

One season, I needed to save a team from relegation and switched my tactics to move to 4 FC/ST's. I desperately needed to score some goals to offset the huge goal differential. I also blew my entire transfer budget on a decent keeper. My inherited keepers were giving up over 2 goals a match. To get a new keeper with no transfer budget, I terminated the contracts of 18 players. Then I used the new difference between my wage budget cap and my new wage budget to ask my board to adjust the budget. This was approved and I was able to get the new GK. Obviously, I went dramatically into the red from paying all the termination fees, but that was still better than relegation because I was able to recoup the loss during the following season.

The following season is when I decided I wanted a particular formation and then built my players around that formation. Then I followed much of the advice the other posters have included above.
