It works, you just have to try make the 4-4-2 more dynamic.

I find it works brilliant if you have farrows on your LM, RM and one CM. Then a barrow on one CM.

I found that 4-4-2 was useless until 8.0.2, seems to have made it really effective for me.

I found 4-4-2 works best if you play defensive and most importantly, keep the ball. Short passing with little creative flair.

With the right settings and the right players, 4-4-2 has worked fine in all of the FMs, and even the last CM or two...

It's just about getting the tactics right for your players.

4-4-2 works just fine on FM08 with the new patch. Its all about how the players use this formation.

As with wwfans Tactical Theorums file, the game is won and lost within the tactics part and generally the team instructions. I have 1 CM with a back arrow to central DM position and a forward arrow on both wide midfielders to the AM positions.

Well...

I find this FM2008 super easy so far. I first started out with one of the preset 442 tactics, which are great; just some minor modifications.

The main problem people get into here, and I have said this before, is when you start fiddling with the Individual Mentalities on your players!

I cannot disagree more with some "super-gurus" here when it comes to that matter. I once read that something from SI where they said 'keep it simple', and trust me, keeping it simple works great.
My team attack and defend as 1!! unit. I keep the Team Mentality dead right in the middle.

Anyways, my flat 442 worked well, the only "hazzle" I had with it, was that I had to change width & and the arrows on wingers when it came to weaker or harder opponents.

With me being super lazy, even that is too much for me :p

So I have just come up with a tactic where I can keep the whole "system" unchanged in every match.

I play MK Dons, and I just beat Nottingham Forest at home 5-1 in the FA Cup (I am in League 2, played 28 league games).
I Won the previos FA Cup match against another Championship team 5-0... I rarely ever have shots against me, and I usually end up with roughly 20 shots on other goal.
Needless to say, I havent yet lost, and I have 11 or 12 wins in a row...

If you ask me, FM2008 seems too easy. Of course I need to play a little more to be sure, since this is my first team in FM2008...

Oh, for the info, the tactic I came up with is a flat 442

Some tips for the premade 442 tactics:

Creative Freedom & Closing Down on 1 for your CD's. That makes wonders. Split the Forward Run on your CM's (One ofthen, other off or mixed). Just keep the rest on default, except for the set pieces and so on.

Good luck!

I just sat through a full 90 minutes using a couple of wwfan's own 442 formations and my side were appalling. I could count the number of accurate passes on one hand. I'm managing Hull City, not a great side but decent enough for a mid-table spot in the first season surely?

To my uneducated eyes, it appears that to have any success at all with 442 then you need to have good players. Simply average won't do. Well that's my latest theory anyway.

Hmm... maybe so. I need more testing on with my team & tactic before I can say if this one I came up with is "great" or not. Will try to take MK Dons directly up in Premier Division.

So far I am very impressed with my 442.

I'd probably tweak passing a fair amount for Championship level. As they were designed for BSP, keeping possession is not the priority. Play around with tempo and pass length and you should see a lot of improvement.
