I wouldn't really call Bolton a "Top Team" but really, it was your fault for going on holiday.

Your Assman could have horrible stats, or plays a different style tactics than you.

There's many factors.

Next time you'll be more prepared.

Would you allow your players to get away with not showing up for a game?

I can understand if it does not work as the optimal solution for the team but 13-0 defeat or anything similar is not acceptable. If we are not missing any other factor here; I would say this is another bug which maybe considered as minor since not many uses holiday feature in real careers anyways but still it causes unexpected outcome.
Removing the holiday feature would be silly. It's not something that happens regularly in real life, of course, nor is it something that most people use in their serious single-player games. However, when you have a multiplayer game going with 20 or so people, it is very rare to have all people willing to play at the same time, and that is when it comes in handy. It is also used in certain other situations, like Kipfizh's AI Experiment thread. It should rarely, if ever, be used in a single-player game where you care about the results.

When you go on holiday and you are manager of a team, you are handing the reins over to your Assman. If you don't trust your Assman to do a good job in that situation, either get a better one, or don't go on holiday in the first place. When I was new to the SI management games, many years ago, I had a great assistant manager, and I would often go on holiday on important matches, because he got better results than I did.

It's not a bug that your Assman can't work with a team you've built up as well as you can. Look at Big Sam at Newcastle compared to when he was at Bolton. The same happens regularly with other managers.

If you really must go on holiday, then you're still able to tell him to use the same tactics and team selection as you, in which case the results should be relatively similar (though it doesn't stop him from doing different things in the match itself).

Ranting because you lost your job because you were using the holiday feature instead of actually, you know, managing the team is silly. If I was a chairman and my manager decided to go on holiday for a month during the season, I'd be pretty peeved, too.

"Sorry boss, it's just Derby after all though. I though I'd pop over to Spain for a quick holiday. Let the under 19's play these teams eh? After all, we're mighty BOLTON and have no reason to expect anything could go wrong if we took a break because we felt like i.. hey what do you mean you're sacking me! I deserved a holiday, I put in two months of solid effort this season!"
