Lampard, Gerrard & Ronaldo are all players who score lots of goals from either midfield or the wing. However FM doesn't seem to be able to replicate this unfortunately.

Or perhaps it does, but I just haven't found out how to yet
Lampard scores a lot of goals from on the wing?

Re-read what he put, midfield or the wing

But that PPM thing "cuts inside" didn't work for me either. In another savegame I had bought Simao (who has "cuts inside" and is right footed) an put him on the left wing, but he still didn't do it. I was going crazy about that, because he is a perfect player to do this.
I think it's a pity that there is no option like "run with the ball to: left, right, middle", just like the focus passing thing, in the days of players like Messi and Ronaldo.
So if anybody has coached ManU and got Ronaldo to score a lot of goals without playing him as a striker, is welcome

I don't know how to set the instructions etc but I'm using a downloaded tactic called 442 project (I think) and the two wide men are always cutting in and scoring lots of goals from outside the box. Currently using Messi and Ronaldinho for Barca but want to sign Ronaldo. Also Guardado is immense in this position

I think FM match engine doesn`t reflect many aspects or styles from real life. Wingers not cutting inside is one of them. Even if you watch teams like Barcelona when managed by the AI, their wingers don`t dribble or play one-two passes cutting inside. It just doesn`t happen.

i dont claim to have a global solution to the 'cut inside' style of wing play..

but i've set up my atletico madrid team to play like that.. because i also dont have good header strikers.. and it seems to work.

i play flat 4-4-2... with arrows only on the CMs. for the ML and MR they have no arrows..
i set their CF on much and give them free roles and run with ball on often..

what i notice.. is that with the free role, they recieve the ball on the wing.. they get challenged either by the opp. winger or fullback, once they use their pace/skill to beat him, they generally will cut into space either down the wing or towards the penalty area because the next line of defensive is occupied by my 2 strikers..

they usually either play a through pass to a breaking striker.. or if the striker drags the DC away, they will drive in and shoot..

i use Simao as ML and Maxi Rodriguez as MR, they have scored a combined 16 goals in 25 games... i also use overlapping fullbacks to supply the crosses...

the wingers cut in more often when the opp. defense tracks my fwd running fullbacks...

to balance attack and defence, i use 2 def mid in CM position with fwd run on mixed...
so attack is 6, defending is 4

oh yeah... another observation...

because the fullbacks come up so often..
the wingers play a lot of 1-2s with them..
the fullbacks are wider than the wingers.. so the wingers use them.. and get between the defence for the return pass..

they also play 1-2s with the strikers.. and also drive in waiting for the return pass

another i do is to have closing down very high for the wingers.. so if i lose possession, they will track back and cover for the fullback who is generally higher up the pitch...

the 2 MCs also add cover

i play with a slow-normal tempo and wide
passing is short-mixed

all other ind. instructions are set to normal for all players.. only for players with pace/dribbling stats is set run with ball on often... even fullbacks

best way to achieve this is probably do this. have a player in MR or AMR, give him mentality either normal or attacking, creative freedom low so he does as told or maybe much for someone special like messi or ronaldo. then depending whther u want them to starting running with the ball from the halfway line or trying to cut int he box either way from half wayline put on sometimes foward runs and for him to attack more (run less with the ball and less space) have him foward runs. make sure he has no through balls no crossing and no long shots. Key thing here is Run with the ball often, everything else never and foward runs either often or sometimes

How about using arrows towards the middle?
