Rep Power: 1 Supporting: Arsenal Footballers: Cesc Fabregas | Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City, Everton and Tottenham trying to chase Albelda Quote:
There are a number of Premier League clubs on the hunt for a midfield anchorman this summer such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City, Everton and Tottenham. Well, there’s a superb, experienced player fitting that bill reportedly available for a cut-price £1.5m. That player is Valencia’s David Albelda.
The 30-year-old is looking to leave the club this summer after a disappointing season in the last campaign when the team surprisingly struggled and he fell out with former coach Ronald Koeman. The Dutchman axed team Captain Albelda alongside other experienced stars Miguel Angulo and Santiago Canizaries on his arrival. This led to the player pleading for the club to end his contract on amicable terms due to his long service. The request was ignored by the club so in January Albelda seeked legal advice in order to leave the club.
Valencia Veteran Perfect for the Premier LeagueHowever, after Koeman was sacked all 3 veteran stars were reinstated into the side under new coach Voro and Valencia successfully retained their top flight status. Since then the club have appointed Almeria’s young Spanish manager Unai Emery who has decided to allow Albelda to leave.
The 5 ft 11 midfielder has played his entire career with the club apart from 2 season long spells with Villarreal. He has made a total of 237 League appearances for the club (5 goals). Albelda won 2 League titles, a Uefa Cup and a European Supercup with the club. He also suffered the heart-break of a Champions League final defeat in 2001.
Albelda was a particular favourite of former Spanish national Coach Luis Aragones but due to a lack of first team football he missed out on Euro 2008 and could not build on his 51 appearances for his country. His career includes playing in the 2002 and 2006 Worlds Cups as well as Euro 2004 and the 2000 Sidney Olympics where he won a silver medal.
Tottenham’s Juande Ramos is reported to be keen on bringing his compatriot to White Hart Lane to add steel and experience to Spurs attack minded midfield although Chelsea have also been linked and have recently sold Claude Makelele. However, the combative disciplined midfield general would surely be an excellent relatively short-term signing for the likes of Arsenal, Everton and Man City who also need defensive midfield reinforcements.
| So what do you think? is it a worth signing for each team? He's quite old but maybe still effective.
